Hazel

Hazel Class is one of our Year 5 and 6 high needs classes, supporting pupils with complex learning needs. Children benefit from a high level of personalised learning, with smaller class sizes and a higher staff-to pupil ratio to ensure they receive the support they need to thrive.

Children follow the Navigator or Adventurer pathway, which is broad, balanced and relevant to their needs. Learning is carefully structured around a highly individual, child-led timetable, designed to support progress across four key areas: Cognition and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Physical and Sensory development and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH).

Teaching is consistent and supported by engaging, calm classroom environements, visual supports and hands-on, multi-sensory learning. A strong focus is placed on sensory processing and theraputic approaches, helping children feel safe, regulated and ready to learn. Children have access to a multi-sensory programme, including light and sound experiences, sensory circuits, outdoor learning and therapies. Some children also follow sensory integration programmes, built into daily routines.

As children move through Year 5 and 6, there is a strong focus on preparing for the next stage, including transition to college. To provide the right level of challenge and support, some children will join other classes for key lessons such as maths and phonics, helping children build confidence, independence and important life skills.

A key part of this preparation includes the Year 6 residential visit and a dedicated PSHE week in the summer term,  supporting relationships, sex and health education (RSE) personal development and readiness for future transitions.

All children have Personalised Learning Goals (PLGs), which support the development of independence and help them become confident, world-ready learners.

Hazel Class provides a calm, nurturing and structured environment where children are supported to develop skills, confidence and independence at a pace that is right for them.
