Relationships Education (RSE)

At Manor Green Primary School, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, valued and confident. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) helps us achieve this.

RSE supports our vision to learn, enjoy and achieve together and reflects our commitment that every child is unique and will have the opportunity to succeed.

What is RSE?

RSE teaches children about:

  • Friendships

  • Families

  • Respect

  • Personal safety

  • Growing up

  • Being kind and inclusive

It helps children understand their bodies, recognise safe and unsafe situations, and know who to talk to if they are worried.

RSE is not about the promotion of sexual activity. It is about helping children develop healthy relationships and stay safe.

What Do Children Learn?

Teaching is always age-appropriate and adapted to meet the needs of our pupils.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1

Children learn about:

  • Being kind

  • Sharing and taking turns

  • Personal space

  • Trusted adults

  • Privacy

In Key Stage 2

Children learn about:

  • Healthy and unhealthy friendships

  • Online safety

  • Respect and boundaries

  • Puberty and body changes (Years 5 and 6)

In Years 5 and 6, pupils learn about puberty, body changes and where babies grow as part of the Science curriculum.

When we talk about families, we do so respectfully, recognising that families may look different from one another.

Our Approach

As a primary special school, teaching is:

  • Carefully planned

  • Delivered in small, manageable steps

  • Revisited regularly

  • Supported with visuals and adapted communication tools

We create a safe and supportive environment where children can ask questions and learn confidently.

Working with Parents

We value partnership with families.

Parents can request to see curriculum materials at any time.

Parents cannot withdraw their child from Relationships Education or Health Education. However, they may request withdrawal from any non-statutory elements of sex education beyond the Science curriculum.

If you have any questions, please contact the school office or speak to the RSE Lead.

At Manor Green Primary School, RSE helps every child feel safe, respected and prepared for the next stage of their life.
